The Photography of Stan Hingston
My interest in photography began at the age of 5 pursuing a Richardson's ground squirrel (known then as a gopher) with my older brother's borrowed camera. Nature and wildlife remains an important element of my photography, but I have widened my interests to include prairie landscape, environmental portraiture, and historical preservation. The 10 images in this collection represent a variety of my recent work. The more recent photos were taken with my new Panasonic FZ30 digital camera; the earlier ones with a Canon TX 35mm SLR.
1. The Johnson Stone House (ca. 1990) - This photo has a special meaning for me as my mother lived in this house with her family while attending high school. My parents were even married in the house in 1945. The house is still standing but is no longer safe to enter.
2. Gone to Seed (September 2006) - This old seeder was taken in the farmyard of a friend in the Park Valley area of northern Saskatchewan. I like the rich reddish-brown color of the machine illuminated by the evening sun.
3. LichenForest (September 2006) - This is a close-up of a moss and lichen covered roof of an old pumphouse in northern Saskatchewan. I like the way it resembles an exotic forest. Note the shingle nails for scale.
4. Paddling Duckling (August 2006) - This young duck was cruising the Bow River in a Calgary park about 10-15 meters from me. The long 12X zoom and the high 8 mega-pixel resolution of the FZ30, plus the low resolution requirement for the web, allowed significant cropping to produce this close-up image.
5. Sarge (Christmas 2005) - The cat's bale-stack perch at my father-in-law's farm near Didsbury Alberta allowed me to get my camera almost right in his face. The late afternoon light softened an otherwise sinister expression as he was peering intently into the sunset.
6. Family Wedding (August 2006) - Every photographer gets talked into shooting a friend's wedding sooner or later. This family shot was taken in a Rosetown park, backlit by the late afternoon sun with the camera's pop-up flash for fill light. The interaction between father and son is what made this image my favorite.
7. Beaver Lodge Family Portrait (September 2006) - This was one of my first environmental portraits. My friend posed with his children on an old beaver lodge on the edge of a small lake on his farm in northern Saskatchewan.
8. Donna's Flower Garden (August 2006) - This photograph was taken to record a friend's gorgeous flower garden. The ivy covered stuccoed building in the background makes the photo look more like an old English garden than one in a small Saskatchewan town.
9. Foggy Island (August 2004) - This was my best photo from a four hour whale-watching tour out of Port McNeill on Vancouver Island. We did see some orcas after the fog lifted but nothing too spectacular.
10. "Peaking" through the Clouds (May 2006) - We happened to be on the right side of the plane flying from Victoria to Calgary to see this view of Mount Baker, Washington. I like the patterns of white and blue created by the clouds and snow-covered peak.
